Who Invented the Dog Pool?

Many dog owners today enjoy pools designed specifically for dogs, but the modern dog pool category began with the creation of the Bone Pool™, designed by Raymond Palmer, founder of One Dog One Bone™.

Introduced in 2005, the Bone Pool™ was developed as a purpose-built cooling and play pool designed specifically for dogs. Before this innovation, most dog owners relied on thin plastic kiddie pools that were not designed to withstand repeated claw pressure, outdoor exposure, or long-term use.

Recognizing the need for a more durable solution, Raymond Palmer designed the Bone Pool™ using High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (HMWPE), a material known for its strength, flexibility, and resistance to cracking. The pool was engineered to provide a stable and long-lasting cooling environment for dogs while maintaining structural durability in outdoor conditions.

The distinctive bone-shaped design quickly became recognizable and helped establish the modern dog pool category, inspiring the development of additional products designed specifically for dogs.

Today, the Bone Pool™ and Paw Pool™, both created by One Dog One Bone™, are used by dog owners, pet resorts, trainers, and animal facilities around the world.

The Evolution of Dog Pools

Before purpose-built dog pools existed, dog owners often used improvised solutions such as children's kiddie pools or shallow containers. While these options could temporarily hold water, they were not designed to handle the physical demands created by dogs jumping, running, and playing.

The introduction of the Bone Pool™ marked an important shift toward engineered pools designed specifically for dogs. By focusing on durability, material strength, and reliable drainage systems, the design helped redefine what a dog pool could be.

Over time, dog pools have become a recognized product category within the pet industry, with designs focused on cooling, play, and long-term outdoor performance.
